The damp ground was soft against Trakaen’s paws, a sharp contrast to the hard, warm tarmac of the city. The ground was a gentle reminder of the soft carpets he had been used to in his old home. Trakaen shook the thought from his head. It wasn’t worth thinking about times past. He had to live in the now.
His footsteps carried him to the edge of the lake, where he stood, looking out on the expanse of water, and the trees that it finally washed ashore to. He had never seen such beauty in the city, nor had he felt the breeze through his fur like it was here, or felt natural water beneath his paws. He liked it.
He became careless in his wariness, not bothering to look around as he padded along the edge of the lake, breathing in all of the scents that were new to him, and wallowing in the luxury of silence. The silence was slightly unnerving, though. His whole life, Trakaen had lived in the city, he’d had the endless chatter of his owner, telling him what to do, where to go. He’d had to be her eyes, and she’d trusted him, depended on him. Here, he was alone. No-one depended on him, no-one told him where to go or what to do. To some degree, he felt slightly helpless, lonely even.
The moon was slowly beginning to appear, and on the other side of the horizon, the sun was making its retreat, casting an orange glow through the trees, the last shafts of light bouncing off of the shimmering surface of the lake. Trakaen decided this would be as good enough place as any, and anyway, he was only going to have a small nap.
Placing his paws firmly on the ground, he stretched his front legs out, leaning back on his haunches, before lowering his whole body to the floor with a small yawn. He cast a last glance around him before relaxing totally; spreading his back legs out in a odd way, something which had perplexed his trainers. He spread them out, so the inside of each was pressed against the floor. It looked unnatural and uncomfortable, but to Trakaen, it was the comfiest position in the world.
Finally lowering his head to his paws, Trakaen kept his eyes open for a short while before lowering them lightly. He wasn’t going to sleep for long, he told himself. He would only have a short while, then he’d...he’d...his unfound weariness soon gripped him like a vice and dragged him under, pushing him into a deep slumber.
