name: hugo
pronunciation: HYOO-goh
alias: hugo
age: three years
gender: male
breed: schipperke
appearance:lean; powerful; agile; intimidating
larger in every way than is normal for his breed, Hugo stands at roughly 16 inches and a good 25 - 30 pounds. combine this with his tendency to narrow his eyes at other males and take a defensive stance, and you have an intimidating presence. all that extra weight isn't fat; it's definitely muscle. you can see it ripple beneath his jet black coat when he makes even the slightest movement.
aside from his being abnormally large, his characteristics are typical of a schipperke; a generally rectangular body, rounded skull, narrow muzzle, triangular ears, and a tail that curls over the back are all giveaways that he is a purebred Belgian boat dog - though he certainly isn't from Belgium.
interestingly enough, he is conscientious of his coat and will not hesitate to stop and groom it if he starts to notice even the slightest upset. while he has never taken an actual bath, he has always been a dog to love the water - and rain especially puts him in a good mood.
personality:kind; quiet; competitive; protective; optimistic
for the short time that he knew his mother, he had been taught not to speak unless spoken to. as much as he grew to dislike his mother, this lesson stuck with him and likely will for the rest of his life. being soft-spoken even when he does talk makes it a rarity to ever hear him speak.
still, when he does bother with spoken language, his words are accented with American pronunciation, from the northern states. he is capable of all emotions, and his sincerity in them makes many feel a bit awkward if they aren't accustomed to it. he words could be sweet and soothing; calming and supportive; joyful with mirth at some small joke between friends; taunting at a friendly foe; or searing with rage at one who mistreats others.
while he will defend males who deserve it, he is much more generous toward females due to his witnessing the cruel acts males are more often inclined to. he hates violence, but will not be stopped if he sees a female hurt by anyone. still, he has a strong conscience and often feels guilty; he is very much capable of putting on the hurt, and has done it before.
being deprived of love for a long time, this poor pup is in search of a mate - though he isn't desperate. he is confident that if he's patient, he'll come across the right dog for him. until then, his heart will remain waiting and full of the love that for so long he has been unable to share.
history:disheartening; characterizing; pitiable; empowering
he doesn't remember where he was born, only that he was part of a small little of two. he does remember his sister though; she used to always tease him about being born first, if only by one minute. for a long time, he had a great living. he never knew his dad, but his mother was all he needed. she was kind, giving and forgiving, a great teacher, and certainly taught him alot about life - including that change is painful.
to this day he isn't sure what caused it, but his mother approached him and his sister and told them simply to follow. they all walked along hot pavement and ran through out-of-the-way forestry for days on end. when they finally stopped, they had all gone through a pretty serious change. gone was the sister who was fun to play with - she was now too serious and more concerned with herself than anything her little brother had to say. gone was the mother who would always look out for them and whisper motherly things in their ears before they went to bed - she was now cold and always telling Hugo he was too old for those things. and finally, gone was the Hugo who loved to laugh and always spoke aloud, who made jokes all the time and was a social butterfly, great company. he was replaced by the quiet dog who was too afraid to show his feelings anymore.
from then on, they all lived separate lives. sure they slept in the same box in the same alleyway every night, but there was no communication. his mother didn't even try to pry. he used to hear all the other dogs back home complain about how their mothers would nag them about their day until they got every last detail. was it odd that he felt nostalgic toward something he had never had?
finally, when he could stand it no longer, he chose not to go home. the distance between his family, the only thing he had ever owned all his life, grew to be too much. he left them a large portion of food that he had found and silently stalked off, hoping to find something - or rather, something - else that he could devote his affections to.
